Questions that come with this
Why is 21 percent of 121 euro not the VAT?
Because the VAT is already inside that 121 euro. You work backwards: 121 times 21 divided by 121, so 21 euro of VAT and 100 euro excluding. Taking 21 percent of 121 gives 25,41 euro, more than a fifth too much. This is the most common mistake in a manual calculation.
When does the 9 percent rate apply?
Among other things to food and drink, books, medicines, passenger transport and some labour-intensive services such as painting homes older than two years. The zero rate mainly applies to exports and supplies within the EU to a business with a valid VAT number. The Belastingdienst publishes the full list.
