If an invoice stays unpaid you may claim collection costs. How much is set by decree: fixed percentages over brackets, with a minimum of 40 euro and a maximum of 6.775 euro.

Questions that come with this
May I always claim collection costs?
With a business client you may claim them as soon as the payment term has passed; the 40 euro minimum then applies by law. With a consumer you must first have sent a reminder with a term of fourteen days after receipt, stating the amount you will charge afterwards.
Why is it 40 euro on a small invoice?
The decree sets a minimum. On a principal of 100 euro, 15 percent would be 15 euro, so the 40 euro minimum applies. On very large claims it works the other way: above roughly 666.000 euro it stays at the maximum of 6.775 euro.
