Calculate your hourly rate
Start from what you want to keep and work backwards. The dial that matters most is billable hours: you work more hours than you can invoice, and your rate has to carry the unpaid ones.

Questions that come with this
How many hours a year can I invoice?
Far fewer than you work. Someone doing forty hours a week usually ends up with between 1.000 and 1.400 billable hours after holidays, sales, admin and travel time. Enter what you actually reach; that number drives your rate more than any other in this calculation.
Which costs belong in it?
Everything you spend in order to work: insurance, tools, van and fuel, phone, software, bookkeeping, trade literature and your workspace. Pension and a reserve for illness belong there too, or you can carry them through the buffer.
